desert camps

Have you always dreamed of a fairytale of 1001 Nights? Of the desert and the stars? Of camel rides and candlelight dinners? Well, this dream comes true in the beautiful desert camps near Marrakech.

Even those who visit the Red City on the basis of a short trip should take the time for a trip into the desert.

You will be picked up in Marrakech, sleeping in beautiful Bedouin tents, taking camel rides or quad tours, dining under the stars, sitting by the campfire and marveling at the red sunrise over the desert hills and the Atlas Mountains on the horizon in the early morning. Certainly an unforgettable experience and a little insight into the (seasoned) desert world of Morocco.

In recent years, several camps have settled in the arid Agafay Desert, southwest of Marrakech. Although there are no sand dunes in the traditional sense, but a beautiful stone desert of rolling hills and an amazing panorama of the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas. You can reach the desert in about 45 minutes from Marrakech.

The desert camps around Marrakech – our recommendation: Scarabeo Camp

Our absolute favorite was the tour to the Scarabeo Camp. Luxurious tents, chic ambience, incredibly friendly staff, delicious food and a fantastic location – frankly, I find it difficult to find suitable words for the special nature of this camp. It’s just indescribably beautiful. One of the most breathtaking „hotels“ I’ve ever seen and worth every penny.

With a chic jeep you will be picked up in the afternoon in Marrakech (at the hotel or an agreed meeting point). After about 45 minutes you arrive at the camp. A dozen large, bright white tents are spread over the rolling hills of the Agafay Desert. Each of them has a private terrace with seating from which you can enjoy the panoramic view of the Atlas Mountains.

The tents are very spacious and equipped with the highest quality materials. There is a large double bed, a couch, a desk, a safe, a fireplace (!) and a nice bathroom with shower and camping toilet.

In addition, fluffy towels, beauty products, water and small delicacies are provided for the guests.

The main tent will welcome you with a sweet mint tea and delicious snacks. There are several terraces and tents where you can relax.

If you want you can do a quad tour or a camel ride.

In the evening it gets really romantic: in the whole area about 1,000 lanterns and candles are lit. There are bonfires and atmospheric live music. Dinner is served in the beautiful main tent. Candlelight feasts on light salads, lamb tajines and fruity desserts.

Then you can enjoy a drink under the breathtaking starry sky or simply listen to the soothing silence of the desert.

Before returning to Marrakech the next morning, you can enjoy the rich breakfast in the main tent or on one of the terraces. Crepes, coffee, yoghurt, fruits, jam, rolls and freshly squeezed juices. The perfect start to a sunny, beautiful day.

Back in busy, noisy Marrakech, you may wonder if it was all just a dream. The stars, the candlelight, the silence … a dream come true from 1001 Nights.

Of course, the luxurious Scarabeo Camp also has its price – but the service and ambience is really great and it is certainly an unforgettable experience.

By the way, the Scarabeo Camp offers several camps scattered around the Agafay Desert (we were in ‚Stone Camp‘ ourselves).

There are also private camps that can be rented exclusively for a closed group (eg for a wedding).
