Just as in Marrakech, Fès is spoiled for choice when it comes to overnight accommodation. From lovingly restored Riads in the Medina, to modern hotels in the new town, there is everything your heart (and purse) desires.
In Fès, too, a riad is the „more authentic“ solution as a hotel/resort.
A riad (a so called „dar“ ist the simple version of a riad) is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with a lofty courtyard or garden. Many of them have been lovingly restored in recent years and transformed into inviting hotels.
Often they have only a few rooms and look very inconspicuous from the outside. The interior is mostly even more stunning: inner courtyards full of palm trees and plants, small pools, fountains, ponds, cuddly rooms, four-poster beds, Persian rugs, brass lamps, colorful mosaics, stucco and tadelakt baths – a true dream of 1001 Nights!
In Fès tradition is a top priority – here you will find only a few styled hotels, as in Marrakech. But many authentic, unique riads full of precious artifacts and treasures.
Riads in the medina are almost in the middle of the action – even if they are often hard to find! For the day of arrival it is best to be picked up from a hotel employee at a meeting point that accompany you to the riad. Google Maps is also a good guide.
Be aware of the children/young people who want to show you the way. They know the narrow alleys of the medina really well, but they also demand a „small tip“ for their services. Where „small“ then sometimes rather means „big“.
Our favorite: the Ryad Salama
Our absolute favorite was the beautiful Ryad Salama in the middle of the medina of Fès.
I’ll never forget the moment when we walked through the big, heavy wooden gate into the courtyard for the first time! It was like entering another world – a world full of peace and quiet, teeming with chirping birds and lush green plants. It was indescribable – an oasis in the middle of the turbulent, chaotic world of the medina!
For us it was the very first time we entered a Moroccan Riad and to be honest, I would not have thought of a better place than the Ryad Salama for that.
The house is located between the two „main streets“ of the bustling Medina and is within walking distance of the large parking lot Ain Azliten – the location is really unbeatable!
The riad offers 7 rooms and suites full of traditional décor and quality materials. All have their own balcony (or terrace) overlooking the lush landscaped courtyard.
Already on arrival you will be greeted by the incredibly friendly staff. At a sweet mint tea, Iolanda, the manager, likes to talk about the sights and attractions of the royal city and will help with every question.
The rich breakfast is served in the courtyard or in the beautiful salon of the Riad (depending on the weather). There is really everything your heart desires. Jams, crepes, rolls, croissants, egg dishes …
On reservation you can also have dinner at Ryad Salama. At a „light dinner“ you will be spoiled with delicious Moroccan salads, light soups and fruity desserts.
The beautiful courtyard with a small pool, fountains and orange trees invites you to relax. But the real trump card of the house are, next to the unbeatable location and the great interior, its staff! After almost a decade in the upscale hotel/restaurant industry, I honestly never met such attentive and genuinely friendly employees. At the Riad Salama the guest comes first and you can feel it every single moment.
We can only recommend Ryad Salama and can not wait for our next stay there!
