Marrakech accommodation

Marrakech’s offer of accommodation is overwhelming! Here you are spoiled for choice: either you opt for a large, modern resort outside the old town with huge pool area, spacious rooms, half board and often better value for money or for a small, cute riad in the medina (from what it in Marrakech there are about 1,000!).

The former is the „western“ solution. With a resort you do not go wrong. Especially in the low season, there are unbeatable bargains! However, you should pay attention to how far the hotel complex is from the sights and the medina (and whether you need a taxi every time to get there).

A Riad, on the other hand, is the most authentic accommodation in Marrakech. A riad (or a dar = simple version of a riad) is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with airy courtyard or garden. In recent years, countless riads have been bought by Europeans, lovingly restored and converted to „(boutique) hotels“.

Riads in the old town are usually small, often offer only a few rooms and look very inconspicuous from the outside – but do not let this scare you! The interior of the riads is often downright stunning!

From colorful mosaics, Tadelakt bathrooms, painted cedar wood ceilings, wrought iron balconies, Persian carpets, leather poufs, filigree brass lamps and stuccoed arcades you will find everything that makes the interior heart beat faster – dreams of 1001 night are indeed true!

Of course, the offer varies – as well as the price! There are simple budget riads with shared bathrooms and stylish luxury homes with air conditioning, pools and 5 star service.

What all riads in the medina have in common, however: their unbeatable location – they are literally in the middle of everything! And do not be afraid of sleepless, noisy nights – riads are designed to block out any outside noise. Entering a riad, you enter another world – a world of peace, freedom and babbling fountains.

Tip for your accommodation in Marrakech:

Marrakech has the highest room rates in Morocco. If you travel in the off-season, you can save real money! Book riads in the medina in advance – the offer is limited.

The riads in the winding streets of the medina are often very, very hidden. Google Maps helps with orientation. Even shopkeepers are happy to help. Even better: make a rendezvous with the Riad employees and be accompanied to the riad for the first time.

Accommodation in Marrakech – our recommendation: Riad Bab 54

The Riad Bab 54 was our absolute favorite and with its beautiful decor, delicious food and friendly staff the most beautiful Riad of our entire Morocco trip!

This small boutique hotel enjoys an excellent location on the Place des Epices („Square of Spices“ or Place Rahba Ladima). The main souks can be reached in about 1 minute, the Jeema El-Fna after about 5 minutes.

The Bab 54 was lovingly restored by its French owners and furnished incredibly tasteful and stylish with a mixture of modernity and tradition.

The riad has only 6 rooms grouped around an airy, bright courtyard. All have tadelakt baths and are equipped with high quality textiles.
There is a pool in the courtyard and sun loungers and seating for relaxing on the sunny roof terrace. Also the rich, delicious breakfast is served here.

But the absolute highlight of the riad is, in addition to the location and its incredible decor, the dinner! There is no „restaurant“, but with a reservation guests can enjoy their dinner here. Delicious Moroccan salads, the best lamb tagine of our entire journey and a fruity dessert – delicious!

Our stay at Riad Bab 54 was frankly perfect.

We can only recommend it and hardly wait for our next visit!
